Williams' book Morality. An Introduction to Ethics has been published in 1972 for the first time.
In this book, the author already outlines most of the questions that will be central for him throughout his philosophical career. Thus the reader will encounter already in this book Williams' criticism of Kant, utilitarianism and Williams thematizes his concept of authenticity as well.
Throughout the book, Williams' arguments are based on the insight that ethics cannot be formed into a system. However, this does not mean that we should abandon ethical thought or substitute it with moral preaching.
Any reflection on ethics needs to be based on an argumentation but it must not be reduced to it. Eventually, the goal of moral philosophy is not to find something irrefutable but to acquire the skill of cultivating one's understanding so that one can better understand what one says, thinks and feels.
