People in higher age groups represent highly vulnerable population during SARS-CoV-2 pandemic and are at higher risk of developing COVID-19 infection, more severe course, complications and higher case fatality rates. Seniors living in long term care institutions confer the highest risk.
In the paper we focus on clinical aspects of COVID-19 infection in older population, epidemiology, risk factors and clinical characteristics in the elderly and in the frail residents. Attention is given to atypical presentation and clinical course in long term care facilities.
We interpret data on the viral spread during the facility outbreaks and high fatality rates in Czech Republic and in international context. Lastly, we present strategies for COVID-19 prevention and care management during the pandemics in nursing and care homes.
