The kidneys play crucial role in maintaining stable volume and composition of the extracellular fluid. In case of renal disease, the importance of diet is growing, which, if unsuitable in composition, can contribute to impaired renal function and the progression of chronic kidney disease.
Ways are currently being sought to stop the progression of renal disease - also in view of the extreme socioeconomic consequences. Here is a place for appropriate dietary interventions that can help slow renal insufficiency and maintain good nutritional and general condition.
Dietary recommendations for patients with CKD have evolved considerably, but not all traditional dietary advice is supported by solid evidence. The currently discussed trend in the field of renal diet therapy is the shift from strongly restrictive diets towards more easily adoptable recommendations such as the Mediterranean diet or DASH (Dietary Approach to Stop Hypertension).
The aim of this paper is to give a brief overview of rational dietary recommendations based on evidence and to present our own experience with leading patients with kidney disease at various stages at the Department of Nephrology, 1st Medical Faculty, Charles University and General Hospital in Prague.
