Abstract

The subject of this short article is the reception of the early writings of the German author Ernst Jünger by the Czech philosopher Jan Patočka, as published in Patočka's book Heretical Essays in the Philosophy of History. It is demonstrated how the views of both writers on chosen topics match or differ.

These topics are in particular: war and labour in an industrial society, the German army in the First World War and the conception of man as a force. It is further shown how Patočka evaluates Jünger's ideas based on the polarity of Day and Night and integrates them into his own concept of history.
