Dual semantics of intransitive verbs: lexical semantics vs. presentative meaning

Publication at Faculty of Arts |

Abstract

The paper examines the relations between lexical semantics of intransitive verbs and the presentative function of the verb, with a focus on semantic affinity between the verb and the subject. It attempts to show that semantic affinity between the verb and the subject is also found with verbs that lack the disposition to express presentative semantics, demonstrated by verbs expressing nonvolitional processes specific to human subjects.
