Tertullian: On Prayer

Publication at Catholic Theological Faculty |
2020

Abstract

This volume presents Czech translation of Tertullian's treatise On prayer with an introductory study and commentary. In the first part of the study, Tertullian's life and work, as well as the context, the structure, the form, and the public of his De Oratione is studied.

The second part of the introduction focuses on the prayer in the first Christian centuries, including the practical aspects of Christian prayer of that era. A particular emphasis is put on the gestures and outward practices about which Tertullian speaks in his treatise on prayer.

The third part of the introductory study comes to Tertullian's theology of prayer and his commentary on the Lord's prayer, which makes part of the first chapters of the work. Our Father is presented as an ideal form of the Christian prayer and Tertullian makes sure that proper inner and out-ward attitudes are observed.

The translation of the treatise is the first complete translation of the work in Czech. Biblical, ancient and modern authors, names and topic indices are provided, followed by the bibliography.
