The monograph deals with the transition from manuscript to print and with the parallel existence of the two media types in the initial period of book printing in the Czech lands. The main topics are: the form and function of the manuscript book after the introduction of the printing press, the development of literary texts and genres as mass communication means, the transformations of the book layout as well as changes in the strategy of individual agents involved in the creation, distribution and reception of this medium.
Particular attention is paid to the relationship to books in religiously minor but culturally distinctive social groups in the Czech lands (Jews, the Unity of the Brethren).
