Abstract

The chapter describes philological tradition of the Finnish language teaching at the Faculty of Arts of Charles University, which uses literary texts and their translation in the Finnish language instruction. Although translation has not been recently widely used method in foreign language teaching, it seems that it can significantly improve students' competences in foreign language as well as their translation skills.

This method can be succesfully used from the level A1 od the CEFR if the appropriate literary texts are read, analysed and translated. Multi-layered linguistic and literary analysis of a poem by Einari Vuorela and several possibilities of its translation are described in the chapter.
