Prospects of geothermal energy use in the Czech Republic

Abstract

Geothermal power plants are an important source of low-CO2 energy. In July 2019, geothermal power plants had 14.9 GWe of electricity installed worldwide.

The main problem with the increased use of geothermal energy in the Czech Republic is that the temperature of rocks here reaches energy usable values of over 300°C at relatively great depths. Current technology allows drilling to great depths, but these wells are extremely expensive.

A promising way to make deep drilling cheaper is the so-called hot drilling method, which is studied in the Institute of Rock Structure and Mechanics of the CAS and whose principle is described in this article.
