Since the moment the Codex Basilensis was discovered in 1974, it has gained a reputation for being the most ancient artifact containing a text in a Baltic language. At that time, first attempts to its reading were made, that lately have been giving rise to serious doubts.

The article brings forward the question of approaches to reading of micro-texts and emphasizes that a non-invasive analysis of the original source is essential. The author suggests a new interpretation, according to which the micro-text could be a folklore creation that identifies with the Christmas carol We Three Kings.
