Abstract
Czech language is used regularly as one of the official languages at meetings of EU institutions. It is spoken by delegates and by interpreters working in the booths.
But Czech interpreters, or more precisly interpreters with Czech as one of their working languages, started preparing for work in European institutions well before accession of the Czech Republic. The author focuses on the necessary adaptations to university training of future conference interpreters working with Czech, specifically at the Institute of Translations Studies of the Faculty of Arts of Charles University.
She traces developments in the linguistic and interpreting context in various kinds of meetings, deals in more detail with key moments of the experience of interpreters along with delegates over the16 previous years and she is particularly interested why the Spanish colleagues-interpreters learn and add Czech as their "C" (passive) language and what is their opinion about the Czech speakers and the Czech people in general.
