Abstract

The core of the book follows and interprets the development of schooling and education in Bohemia and Moravia, while also taking into account the situation in Slovakia and Carpathian Ruthenia, as well as in countries neighboring the lands of the Bohemian Crown (from the 9th Century to the beginning of the 21st Century). The focus is on the history of education in its broadest sense, particular attention is paid to the education of young women, religious education, folk education, the development of science and knowledge (both within schools and without); the rise of book culture, including the advent of libraries and printing, as well as reading societies; and the arrival of newspapers and periodicals, and new media.

Different sections also focus on: the transformation of pedagogical and educational policies; the relationship between education and national development; and the architecture of educational facilities. The book also examines school life, student and youth organizations, and provides both local and general perspectives.
