Abstract

The chapter is aimed at clarifying the links between personal anxiety, feelings of dissatisfaction and fear of crime in Czech data stemming from public opinion research Aktér 2015 (N = 926). Its first part provides an overview of findings from interdisciplinary research on the relationship bewteen personal discomfort and fear of crime.

In the second part, we test the hypothesis that people with trait anxiety and those experiencing more serious personal problems in terms of employment, income, standard of living or housing are also more afraid of crime. The hypothesis was confirmed in the Czech sample, when controlling for the influence of gender, educational attainment, victimisation, the age of the respondent, as well as how disorganised they perceive the surroundings of their residence.

Personal problems and anxiety impact fear of crime independently.
