Abstract
The population decline is one of the obvious consequences of the historical events in Serbia. The main goal of the article is to present briefly causes and demographic trends affecting depopulation.
In addition, Serbia, as one of the EU membership candidates, needs to implement political and economic reforms, and harmonize its legislation with the EU standards. One of those efforts is to modernize the population census data collection.
