The article draws attention to the literary anthroponym in Lima Barreto's work as part of a conscious literary strategy. After pointing out some changes in the names of characters between the short story (( Clara dos Anjos }} and the eponymous novel, the correlation between the way of attributing literary names and the types of narratives cultivated by the author is shown.
Finally, we proceed to a more detailed analysis of the names of some characters from The Sad End of Policarpo Quaresma.
