Chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla L.) and its effects on the nervous system

Abstract

Chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla L.) is a well-known plant in the most ancient traditional medicine. In the present it is widely used in Western culture for the cure of numerous illnesses.

It is one of the most popular medicinal plants. Externally it accelerates wound healing, internally is used to treat indigestion, diarrhea, loss of appetite, vomiting, motion sickness, anxiety, insomnia, and respiratory infections.

It also affects the nervous system. Anxiolytic, sedative, antidepressant, neuroprotective, procognitive, and anticonvulsant effects have been observed in in vitro and animal experiments.

The anxiolytic effect was confirmed also in clinical studies.
