Evaluation of the benefits of diabetic education

Abstract

Over the last 15 years, diabetes mellitus therapy has undergone an incredible growth, either in the pharmaceutical field (introduction of new groups of drugs, new types of insulin) or in the field of technology (insulin pumps with new functions, progress of CGM and FGM monitoring). Despite all this progress, however, the percentage of patients achieving target glycaemia did not change significantly.

Education is one of the basic measures that help to improve patients' adherence to treatment. Many studies have shown that with increasing adherence, diabetics improve their metabolic compensation, reduce the incidence of complications of diabetes, and thus the cost of all medical care.

Therefore, education was clearly included in the recommended procedures of the Czech Diabetological Society and other national and supranational organizations. Nevertheless, it is currently not 100% performed, which can be assessed both from VZP records and from questionnaires submitted to patients with DM.

Most diabetics rate education as beneficial and are interested in its regular implementation.
