Specific factors of difficulties in the development of arithmetic skills in elementary school age pupils

Abstract

There are many possible causes of difficulties in mathematics for primary school pupils. In addition to intellectual disability, these may include insufficient training or inappropriate teaching methods.

Also, so-called more specific causal factors, such as speed and accuracy in estimating quantity, spatial ability, working memory and other executive functions, can be the cause. Recognition of these factors and understanding of their effect on the development of arithmetic skills is crucial in the counselling process for determining pedagogical recommendations.

The paper introduces the current state of knowledge of the issue and introduces the concept of a specific disorder of mathematical abilities in a less familiar concept. In our presentation, we will focus on newer ways of identifying these difficulties used mainly abroad.

We will also present the pilot research conducted in the Czech republic.
