The paper elaborates the reasons to take seriously the cosmopolitan approach to social research, which thematizes global risks and learning. It proceeds by interpreting the (especially late) works of Ulrich Beck at the levels of social change research and sociology of science.

In four brief notes, the paper elucidates the fundamental motifs shared by adult learning and education research, policy and practice: justifying education as a common good, global citizenship education, the urban community as a place of learning, and intergenerational relationships and learning.
