Karolinska institute - institution which decides the Nobel Prizes in Medicine

Abstract

Karolinska institute was founded in 1810 as an instrument for the education of military surgeons. Later it achieved an equal level with the universities that educated physicians.

The importance of the institution was underlined by the decision of A. Nobel to decide about the Nobel Prizes in medicine.

At present it is an institution keeping the hundredth position in international scientific ladders similarly to the whole Czech Academy of Sciences. Charles University is around the position two hundred.

The detailed comparison was made between the Karolinska Institute and Faculty of Medicine in Pilsen in teaching, scientific production and financing.
