Talking about taste

Abstract

Talking about taste is not only a question of taste. It is indeed also a question of the language you use.

This article focuses on the Early New High German language in which people between 1350 and 1650 used the word "geschmack" not only to talk about the physical nourishing of their bodies, but much more about the religious nourishing of their souls. The thesis is that the metaphorical use of the word and its synonyms are a very important part of talking about God and of sensing the presence of the divine.
