On the so-called "setting" through the lens of a parallel corpus

Abstract

The author presents analysis of a certain category of the functional sentence perspective, called in Czech "kulisa" (setting), and comprising local and temporal modifications of the sentence. The analysis demonstrates that in Czech, such a setting is a part of the topic (theme) of the sentence and stands at its beginning.

In English, due to its grammatical word order, such a setting may be placed at the end of the sentence. In such a case it is not a bearer of the sentential pitch accent.

The analysis is based on the data from the annotated Czech-English corpus PCEDT.
