Pronunciation errors by Czech pupils learning German

Publication at Faculty of Arts |

Abstract

As a preparatory first step, Czech and German are compared with regard to their phonetic-phonological properties in order to form hypotheses about likely pronunciation difficulties faced by Czech learners of German as a foreign language. We then undertake an empirical analysis of the articulatory phenomena indicated by this comparison in order to find out which of them cause particular problems for Czech speakers when reading aloud.

Finally, we discuss the observed pronunciation errors in the context of possible transfer from languages acquired or learned earlier.
