Abstract

The article aims ways and methods which theatre productions in "small languages" undertake to be understandable. How theatre performances (based on spoken drama) could communicate with audiences speaking different languages? Author studies examples taken from contemporary Czech theatre culture.

Do Czech theatre performances travel abroad? How? Where? How do they try to overcome language barriers? Or do theatre makers resign to the effort of this kind and rather prefer to travel abroad only with the "spoken-text-free" performances? And how does this travelling (or nottravelling) influence picture of a national culture? Author would try to follow several examples of Czech (and Slovak) playwrights, theatres and theatre makers travelling abroad (in the last 30-40 years) and to compare an "international" image of these performances with the point of view of the "local" audience.
