Illness as a Reminder of Human Fragility

Publication at Protestant Theological Faculty |
2020

Abstract

The article consists of two mainparts. In the first part, the author presents a critique of the metaphors of illness presented by Susan Sontag according to her provocative essay entitled Illness as a Metaphor from 1978.

In the second part, the author presents a classical Christian conception of illness based on Scripture. He also shows Anselm Grün's two approaches to illness, illness as an expression of the soul and illness as an opportunity.

The coronavirus pandemic COVID-19 encourages reflection on the topic of the illness in the context of Christian anthropology.
