Abstract

Tamaš Hryb's organizational work in the field of historical science resulted in a compilation of a valuable collection of books, periodicals, and documents in the interwar Czechoslovakia. Hryb was a Belarusian immigrant to the Czech Republic and his activities were supported both by Ukrainian emigrants (Belarusian Academic Cabinet at the Ukrainian Institute of Social Sciences in Prague) and by the Czechoslovak government through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Belarusian Foreign or Historical Archives).

Parts of the collection were forgotten after World War II and parts of it ended up in the archives of several Soviet republics. Nevertheless, recent wide archival research allows to conclude that Hryb's efforts served to preserve the memory of Belarusian society's attempts to form a modern independent Belarusian state and gave Czechs and Slovaks an opportunity to think differently about Eastern Europe.
