Epideixis and Dialogue - Speech from Different Metaphysical Foundations

Abstract

An attempt based on Heidegger's explanation of the metaphysical foundation of Protagoras' thesis homo mensura to transfer this interpretive perspective to confrontation of the speech modes of sophistry (epideixis) and philosophy (dialogue), as presented in Plato's texts. It can be shown that and how these different speech modes at the beginning of our tradition grow out of different metaphysical foundations that are articulated through them.

The misunderstanding between sophistry and philosophy in Plato's texts is not a matter of a different degree of progress of knowledge, but of an essentially different understanding of knowledge, truth, man, and being.
