Master and Malgorzata. Polish women in factories of communist Czechoslovakia

Abstract

In this book, I deal with thousands of female Polish workers sent to Czechoslovak enterprises from the 1960s to 1989. I analyze ambiguous power relations between them and the authorities in a broader sense, ranging from their shop-floor foremen and company management to the central governments and party leaderships of both countries in focus.

I argue that a substantial number of Polish women used their stay in the CSSR during the peak period of labor force cooperation to escape the dual burden of production and reproduction imposed on them as the officially preferred roles of "socialist woman."
