Abstract

In smokers, the course of COVID-19 is significantly more severe than in non-smokers, and especially in those who already have some comorbidities caused by smoking, it requires significantly more often the most demanding treatment procedures. According to the WHO, smoking is associated with an increased severity of disease and death in hospitalized patients with COVID-19.

Given the proven harms associated with tobacco use and second-hand smoke, the WHO recommends that smokers stop smoking altogether. Smoking is the most widespread addiction in the Czech Republic.

The number of smokers is estimated at up to 2,200,000 people. Approximately 300,000 people are being treated for COPD, with an estimated 300,000 more unaware of their disease.

Smoking is associated with increased disease severity and mortality in hospitalized patients with COVID-19. Smokers should thus very strictly follow the recommended preventive measures.

They should best to leave their habit in their own interest.
