Abstract

The study deals with the transformation of the society of the Austrian Empire after 1848 (the adopt of the constitution and introduction of the principle of equality). The efforts of the state to shape the new social hierarchy based on the hierarchy that Austria used in the civil service (Rangklassen) are analysed in detail.

It was now applied to the whole population - with one exception: the highest society in the empire, the aristocracy.
