Abstract
The restriction of the mechanism of closing the ocular cleft in the paralysis of the facial nerve leads to the formation of lagophthalmos. The result is chronic drying of the eye, which damages the surface of the cornea with the risk of ulceration or perforation of the cornea with all the consequences for visual acuity.
The goal of ophthalmic treatment is to maintain the integrity of the corneal epithelium. Traditional treatments are often difficult and treatment is long-term.
A modern solution for lagophthalmos is the application of eyelid implants. Implants, fixed to the subcutaneous tissue of the upper eyelid, allow closing of the eye slit and thus optimal and lasting protection of the cornea.
