Women in Israeli society: Zionist myth about gender equality vs patriarchal reality

Publication at Faculty of Social Sciences |

Abstract

Israel presents itself as a state where equal rights for men and women are granted. However, the reality is often different.

This text analysis three structural factors leading to a lack of equality between men and women: a lack of separation between the state and the religion, political system, and political culture. Furthermore, this text looks closer at the role of the Israeli feminist movement.

Special attention is given to identity politics, which within the feminist movement contributed to the mobilization of marginalized groups, like Mizrachi and Arab women. This text shows that notwithstanding a high level of modernization and despite the gender equality discourse, women in Israel are exposed to systemic discrimination.
