Abstract
The monograph brings a systematic analysis of the phenomenon of aviation into Czech visual culture between 1783 (the first flight of a balloon) and 1957 (the launching of the first cosmic probe). By aviation we mean not only the actual technology of flight, but a branched civilisation process, which historically encompasses mythical ideas, technical fantasies, religious connotations and philosophical thoughts concerning the motifs of rising up, flying and falling
