Abstract
The tradition, culminating in Snorri Sturluson's Óláfs saga helga, is long and rich. In order to appreciate Snorri's treatment of it, it is necessary to illuminate both the context of King Óláf Haraldsson's life during the period of early Christianity in Scandinavia as well as the hagiographic and vernacular literary production.
