The Baťa Company in Zlín - a Shoe Company or a School Company? History of Education

Abstract

The article deals with education in the company town in Zlin as an example of life reform and the reform of the 'new man'. The article reconstructs the so-called education of the industrial man in company town Zli in the interwar period in Czechoslovakia.

The analysis shows how the educational goals and methods were determined by the work ethic of the company Bata in Zlin and by the rules of life and everyday control mechanisms in company town. The educational institutions of the young industrial workers and the women in Zlin are analysed in detail - especially the so-called Batas work school and the student boarding schools.

The role and significance of the concept of scientific management on the work processes and on the social mechanisms and social processes (including education) in company town Zlin will also be discussed. The problem of the rationalization movement, of psychotechnic, of technocratism in the everyday life of education in Zlin becomes apparent.
