Preconception care and treatment of pregetational diabetes

Abstract

Pregestational diabetes mellitus confers significantly greater maternal and fetal risk, depending on the level of diabetes compensation, chronic complications of diabetes and associated comorbidities. The risk of complications in women with pregestational diabetes can be reduced by optimal compensation of diabetes, not only during pregnancy, but especially during conception and in the first weeks of pregnancy, when organogenesis and development of the placenta takes place.

Pregnancy of women with pregestational diabetes should be planned, ideally at the time of optimal glycemic control and their preconception care and care during pregnancy should be concentrated in perinatology centers, which will provide coordinated diabetological, gynecological-obstetrical and neonatological care.
