Multiple breath washout test (MBW) is a promising method for lung function testing. As it is a tidal-breathing test, it may be used even in infants, when asleep (natural or chloralhydrate-induced).

It can also be done by pre-schoolers, who are not able to perform blast expiration during spirometry, but who are patient enough to sit with a face mask or mouthpiece for a few minutes. Together with high sensitivity of lung clearance index (LCI) to most peripheral airway disease and its low intra-individual variability, these features make MBW suitable for longitudinal patient follow up.
