This chapter assesses various aspects of mac Liammóir's engagement with the Irish language, as well as his promotion of translation as a means to enrich Irish-language drama, in the context of his defence of the autonomy of art. As Markus reveals, mac Liammóir's support for Irish drama actually incorporated a critique of nationalism.

In a paradoxical way, mac Liammóir envisaged opportunities for reconciling localism and cosmopolitanism by integrating a local minority language with avant-garde artistic experimentation inspired by international models.
