This contribution, which draws both on historical and legal sciences, deals with the development of the protection of trees in the Czech Lands since early times until the present day. It investigates the reasons which motivated their protection in various historical epochs.
At first, some trees were the object of religious veneration, while later, they became property. This article focuses on legal norms which regulated their protection, explains the circumstances which motivated the adoption of these norms, and describes and explains their content.
The author also touches upon some related subjects, such as trees that marked borders and tree lined avenues.
