To understand and improve the field of medical manage-ment of the acute radiation syndrome (ARS), military andcivilian radiobiology institutions joined one of NATO'sHuman Factors and Medicine (HFM) international researchtask groups (RTG). This RTG is a scientific platform with acommon purpose dedicated to scientific exchange andcollaboration.

In 2010, France began a non-human primate(NHP) experiment using 18 baboons irradiated withsublethal doses to study hematologic acute radiationsyndrome (H-ARS). The baboons were examined over thefollowing 106 days using clinical and biological parameters, and physical dosimetry.

Germany, as part of RTG, wasinvited to contribute methodological expertise in geneexpression analysis. This study remains unique because ofthe precious animal model and because peripheral wholeblood samples were collected at several time pointsallowing a serial molecular biological follow-up linked withH-ARS clinical features.
