Abstract

The main question of the dialogue Kritón is clear from its dramatic context. Socrates is in prison awaiting the death penalty.

His old friend Kriton offers him the opportunity to escape. However, Socrates remains in prison, as fleeing would be unjust, and he will die as ordered by law.

However, a reader or listener of Plato's dialogues may also suspect that the command to die is unjust because Socrates did not commit what he was convicted of. So the question is: should a citizen accept death because it is required by law, when in fact he is not guilty?
