The paper summarizes the issue of providing care in families with a disabled child. It summarizes the types of care, describes formal and informal care and the current legislative framework, defines the concept of shared care, summarizes current numbers of family carers in the Czech Republic and defines self-sufficiency as one of the attributes of preparation for shared care.
A large number of stakeholders are involved in the care of a disabled child. The main indicator of need and extent of long-term care is the degree of limitation resulting from the child's disability and the need of care and support in everyday activities.
Support in the area of self-sufficiency helps to set the process of shared care and set key goals leading to the improvement of life of a disabled child and his family by meeting the needs of the child.
