The Newfoundland's French Shore as a Neuralgic Point of Anglo-French Relations - A Contribution to the History of one Rivalry
Abstract
The purpose of this article is to provide an overview of the context of the Newfoundland Fishery problem and its importance for the signing of the Entente Cordiale, which was generally overlooked by the historians of the Anglo-French rapprochement so far, with the only one exception of Canadian historian James K. Hiller.
This paper expands and complements the author's dissertation thesis on the Entente Cordiale and focuses on the role of the Newfoundland in the process of the negotiation of the convention. Throughout the study of diplomatic documents from the Library and Archives Canada, Ministère des Affaires Étrangères in Paris and The National Archives in Kew, this paper is trying to reveal the character of the mutual quarrels for the fishing rights at the island, the role of the Newfoundland question and its significance for the Entente Cordiale.
