Publication |
2019

Abstract

Aim: To identify the reasons for the occurrence of the missed, rationed and unfinished nursing care phenomenon for effective planning of the strategies related to its prevention. Background: The assumption of the reduction or elimination of the occurrence of the missed, rationed and unfinished nursing care phenomenon in the nursing practice environment is determination and awareness of the reasons for its presence.

Methods: The contribution has the character of a narrative literature review. The search was performed in PubMed and ScienceDirect databases in the period from May 2019 to July 2019.

A total of 28 studies were analysed. Results: We identified significant reasons for the occurrence of the phenomenon of missed, rationed and unfinished nursing care.

These were related mainly to the organisational aspects of the healthcare facility, labour and material resources, as well as to the communication and teamwork, but also the management itself and characteristics of nurses and patients. Conclusion: Many of identified reasons for the occurrence of the phenomenon fall within the competence of the healthcare facility management, from the line to the top, mainly because nurses influence few of them as direct providers of nursing care at the micro-level decision-making processes.

Management may operate with identified reasons through the finding the appropriate way of the solution thus contribute to the overall higher job satisfaction of nurses but also to the provision of more quality nursing care as well as to the improvement of the functioning of the workplace.
