Patients who have recovered from poliomyelitis need regular physical activity to maintain joint mobility, muscle strength and a good physical form. At the end of the 1980s, a consulting room for polio was established at Department of Rehabilitation Medicine, Charles University, First Faculty of Medicine and General University Hospital in Prague, in which patients from the entire Czech Republic are still being treated.
As of 7 August 2020, the total number of polio patients registered at our workplace was 480. In terms of rehabilitation, this group of patients has certain specifics.
Most importantly, they were led to exercise regularly since they were children, but as they had limited opportunities for physical activities, they were motivated to pursue education as well. The aim of their follow-up was to evaluate the effect of group exercise under the supervision of a physiotherapist on the basis of selected objective and subjective tests.
