Abstract

The infusion of ionic solutions has a very long tradition and is an indispensable component of all clinical medicine. The critical situations that affected the human population at the beginning of the last century led to the rapid development of ionic infusions.

The two catastrophic world wars, many local wars, but also a number of epidemics of the last century were a major impetus for the development of infusion therapy. The need for large volumes of ionic infusions was also caused by the development of clinical medicine, which was increasingly invasive.

The widespread use of ionic infusion solutions has also been a prerequisite for the emergence of new approaches and extensive procedures in surgery and modern procedures in the field of traumatology and intensive care. Today, it is quite common practice to use the infusion solution in the field of emergency medicine during the treatment of traffic traumas, industrial accidents, burns, infectious diseases and acute internal conditions.

The administration of ionic solutions required the development of infusion pumps and modern approaches to the venous system in the form of special catheters. It is not surprising that the annual consumption of infusion solutions in the Czech Republic corresponds to the volume that would fill a tank the size of a football field up to a height of 2 m.

The development of ionic infusion solutions is not yet complete. Scientific knowledge in the field of colloidal solutions and discoveries concerning the function of the glycocalyx in the human body open new avenues for the formation of completely different formulas of ionic infusion solutions of higher generation and new unexpected solutions.
