Palpitations-pathophysiology and clinical significance

Abstract

Palpitations are a subjective unpleasant perception of heart activity. They are the result of complex sensorics of the cardiac compartments, large vessels and mediastinum.

They are associated with a range of completely benign diagnoses (increased perception of physiological heart function in anxiety or excessive physical activity) to severe conditions with uncertain prognosis (congenital heart defects, structural heart disease, valve pathology, chronic drug abuse, systemic diseases, etc.). For clinical practice, palpitations are an important impetus for initiating a broader diagnosis of the cardiovascular system.
