Abstract

Autism spectrum disorders are not considered as a rare disease and the probability that a dentist will encounter such a patient in the dental office is very high. The patient with autism spectrum disorder needs to be approached individually and the entire therapy is supposed to be carefully planned, including individual examinations.

The varying degree of non-cooperation is the main problem in the examination and subsequent treatment. This is associated with difficulties of the disease and can be exacerbated by stress from dental treatment.

It is possible for many patients to cooperate in a routine examination after good preparation, and for some, treatment in the dental office is successful. Treatment in conscious sedation is a variant for non-cooperating patients, especially for short unpleasant operations.

The last option is the rehabilitation of teeth under general anesthesia, where it is possible to perform more extensive treatment in otherwise completely uncooperative.
