Occupational Balance in a client recovering from a trauma suffered while intoxicated - a case study

Abstract

The goal of occupational therapy is the maximum possible self-sufficiency and independence of a client in his or her activities, or "occupations", which include self-care, work, and leisure activities. It is necessary that the individual activities are in balance and the client has a balanced daily routine.

Occupational imbalance affects human health. The aim of the article is to explore the topic of occupational balance.

For better understanding, the article is written as a case report of a client, a young man who suffered a traumatic brain injury while intoxicated. The individual phases of this client's two-year rehabilitation are described and changes in his daily routine and the occupational balance of the activities he performed are shown.

Alcohol affected the client's functioning in everyday life and the injury and the treatment.Unfortunately, there was no addiction-specificintervention during the two years of rehabilitation.The article seeks to show the need for greater liaisonbetween different disciplines.
