This edition presents a translation of a theatre play called Vasantasena, by the German playwright Emil Pohl (1824-1901), translated by the poet and translator Jaroslav Vrchlický (1853-1912). The work is a paraphrase of an Old Indian drama called The Little Clay Cart (Mrichhakatika), assigned to King Shudraka from the 3rd century.
Thus, this paraphrase, introduced in 1893 onto the scene of the National Theatre, represents not only a newly found and previously unprinted translation by Vrchlický, but also an interesting adaptation of an Old Indian drama for the Western scene. A more extensive study on the issue of the Czech translation's contemporary reception is being published simultaneously in Divadelní revue 2021, No. 1.
